Reiki is a natural, holistic, non-invasive stress reduction system. The word Reiki (pronounced Ray Key) is a Japanese word meaning universal life energy. Rei meaning universal, present everywhere and Ki, the non physical force, which gives life to all living things. Reiki is not a clinical, neutral force, but a nourishing, nurturing energy. It is the vital force that flows through all matter and can be activated for a powerful form of healing.
Reiki dates back over 2500 years, an ancient healing technique which historically has its roots in India, Tibet and more recently, Japan. For thousands of years, Tibetan Buddhist lamas and monks have possessed a deep understanding of the nature of spirit, energy and matter. They have used this knowledge to heal their bodies, harmonise their souls and lead their spirit to an experience of unity - at one with the source and eventually enlightenment.
The recent history of Reiki - its journey from India and Tibet to Japan and, more recently to the west, owes everything to a spiritual quest by a man devoted to discovering what he believed to be the healing system used by the great healers of old, Buddha and Jesus.
Dr Mikao Usui is the founder of what is known as the system of Reiki today. Dedicating his life, Usui spent many years travelling and studying ancient texts from both Eastern and Western traditions. It has been said that he found invaluable clues whilst studying an ancient Tibetan Sanskrit manuscript. These years of study and prayer prepared him for a deep meditation in which he received the gift of healing during a mystical experience on Mt. Koriyama, a sacred mountain north of Kyoto in Japan. Usui was said to have meditated and prayed for 21 days, by which time he was ready to give up hope. At the end of the 21st day, a ray of light shone down on Usui and the Reiki symbols appeared to him. He was given information on how to activate each of the symbols specific healing energy and they stayed long enough for him to remember each one. When he awoke from his trance like state he knew that he had experienced an initiation. He had become attuned to a wondrous energy. The psychic rediscovery of an ancient healing method. Usui named the healing energy Reiki.

Usui brought the gift of Reiki to the people of Japan. Before his death, he attuned many people to the energy, passing on the knowledge and ensuring it's continuation. Sixteen students went on to achieve shinpiden level or what we in the west might call Master Teacher. These sixteen continued to pass on the knowledge until Reiki was eventually brought to America and to Europe in the latter part of the 20th Century by Mrs Hawaya Takata. Mrs Takata was a Japanese American who studied Reiki in Japan. On her return to America she went on to initiate the first of many Reiki Masters there. Since those days, Reiki has grown and spread throughout the western world. All Reiki Practitioners and Teachers in the western tradition can trace their lineage back to Mrs Hawaya Takata.

People have always used Reiki to help themselves and others to stimulate their natural healing processes and people continue to do that. Reiki is timeless in its relevance and application in healing and transforming the human condition. The increasing popularity of Reiki is a good indication of the large number of people who have already found benefit from this gentle, peaceful, relaxing therapy.

Although Reiki has a background related to Buddhism, there is no creed, dogma or religion attached to it. Reiki does however recognise the Buddhist principles of valuing and respecting all living things and the environment as a whole. Reiki recognises no boundaries and is open to everyone, all that is required is the willingness to heal and to be healed.
