Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel, or vortex, and it refers to each of the energy centres of which our energy system, is composed. Just as the body is comprised of bones, muscles, skin and all the parts which form our physical anatomy, it is also made up of layers and centres of energy, connected by an encompassing energy field. This energy field, or aura, has many different layers, physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
Chakras are energy-flow intersections within and between the physical body and the different layers of the aura. There are dozens of chakras in the human energy system, but the seven main ones are aligned from the base of the spine to the top of the head. These chakras, or energy centres, function as pumps or valves, regulating the flow of energy through our energy system. If energy is flowing freely through the chakras and energy bodies, then the body is likely to be in good health. Blockages in this system are inevitable as part of everyday life. It is said that illness can be caused by these blockages, but can actually be prevented from manifesting in the physical body if cleared in time.

Reiki restores balance to all layers of the energy body, particularly by working with the main chakras, clearing any blockages that may have developed. It is not only our physical health which is affected, blockages in the energy system can also affect the way in which we interact with the world. Understanding the energy of the chakras can help us to gain more conscious control of our physical, emotional, psychological and, ultimately, our spiritual well-being.
The seven main chakras

Crown Chakra
This chakra relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing. When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection and bliss |

Brow Chakra
This chakra is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us see things from a higher perspective. |

Throat Chakra
This is the chakra located in the throat and is related to communication, self-expression and creativity. When healthy, this chakra allows us to speak our truth. |

Heart Chakra
This chakra is related to love. A healthy heart chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of peace. |

Solar Plexus Chakra
This chakra is known as the power chakra. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. |

Sacral Chakra
This chakra, located in the abdomen, lower back, and sexual organs, is related to emotions and sexuality. This chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfilment, and the ability to accept change. |

Base Chakra
Located at the base of the spine, this chakra forms our foundation. It is related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies. When activated, this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence |
Transpersonal chakras
There are also many other chakras we can work with. The transpersonal chakras, which we explore in detail as part of Shamballa Reiki II training, take our understanding of the human energy system to another level. We connect with two of these transpersonal chakras during Shamballa Reiki I training, the Earth Star Chakra and the Soul Star Chakra.

Earth Star Chakra
Located beneath our feet, the Earth Star Chakra is our connection to the earth. We may visualise this chakra as being black and glowing from within. When the Earth Star Chakra is activated, it allows us to be fully grounded and present. This in turn affects all the other chakras, allowing them to open in a much more profound way. |

Soul Star Chakra
Our connection with Reiki energy, Shamballa, Christ-consciousness and the Ascended Masters. When activated, the Soul Star Chakra fills our aura with a glittery golden energy, purifying, cleansing and protecting us. |
We use a deep, cleansing chakra meditation as part of the preparation during the attunement process.
